On this day: First British Open Golf Championship
Friday, 17th October 2014 by Ian Brown
On this day in 1860 the first British Open Golf Championship was held at the Prestwick Golf Club. Eight golfers vied for the title over a single day of competition comprising three rounds of the twelve-hole course. Willie Park Senior won the event and took home a handsome red leather belt sporting a grand silver buckle. A far cry from today's event where the winner takes home close to a million pound and the famous claret jug.
