Surely the Burj Kalifa is the tallest self supporting tower in the world? The category was invented when there were structures that weren’t guyed masts, but that weren’t considered proper buildings, and that were taller than any building. Given that the skyscraper in Dubai is taller than anything else in any of the categories, they are largely redundant now!
I’d argue that Burj Kalifa (which I went up last month!) is the tallest building, and that tower should be reserved for unoccupied structures.
(We’ve got to give the rest of the world a chance to have superlative structures too, right? Can’t let the UAE win everything!)
