I believe the San Francisco Bay photo shows the Cargill salt solar evaporation ponds (with algae growing in them): http://www.cargillsalt.com/sfbay/T_solar_intake.html
Those aren’t salt pools in the Utah shot. They’re tailings from a potash mine near Moab – the mine and mill can be seen nearby.

WEIrd spelling
I second the post by Salty. Those are salt ponds, not pollution control ponds, in the San Francisco Bay.
As the water evaporates and the salinity increases, the algae change color from green to pink. Flamingos eat these algae and turn pink themselves. No, really!
