Wow! I live near the orginial one at Uffington in Oxfordshire. http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/majorsites/uffington.html
there is one a lot smaller in Folkestone, Kent
if you look at the picture the bottom right part, there is a lizard too!
Yeah, there’s a lizzard, looks like a little gecko
This is actually a copy of the one in England, made by an architect: http://hows.org.uk/personal/hillfigs/foreign/uff/uff.htm
I had never heard of the Uffington White Horse before this year. When I first saw a pic, I instantly recognized it from a copy I had seen 17 years ago.
Working at an airpark (residential airport) made for lots of flying time in light planes. In 1988 I saw a this style white horse, possibly original sized, from the air somewhere within 5 miles East to South of Luthersville GA USA. My (brief) search of newer Terraserver images was unsuccessful in locating it. I would love for somebody with more time to be able to locate it.
The subsoil here is red-to-yellow clay; so there is no white substrate to expose. One would have to dump chalk several inches deep to create this figure. Without continuous upkeep, it would dissappear in 3-5 years in this mild climate and 45-50 inches of rain yearly.
I grew up in the village of Ashbury two miles from the Uffington White Horse. We visited and played around it and Uffington Castle, the iron age earthwork nearby as children on many occasions. I have written about it in the past and am at present writing a mystery novel (sounds pretentious) called “The Uffington Mystery” which features the White Horse, the Ridgeway, Waylands Smithy and the many crop circles which appear on the Berkshire Downs (now Oxfordshire). I was thrilled to see the Mexican version, even if it is galloping the other way! I would welcome contact or exchange of information.
