Central Taxi Hold, JFK

You can never find a taxi when you need one and at JFK airport that’s because they’re all hiding in a four acre sea of yellow known as the Central Taxi Hold. According to the New York Times the drivers wait here for up to five hours at a time, playing football, dominoes or backgammon. Apparently it’s worth the wait though as the drivers earn a $45 flat fare to Manhattan.

    In another section of JFK, you can see a cargo plane that ran off the end of the runway:

    Here is the taxi hold at Chicago O’Hare. Not as impressive, since cabs in Chi-town aren’t all yellow. Next door is the hold for limos.

    I just wasted about an hour on this stuff! Frightening to see how close planes are really. I know they’re different hights and all that, but even so…
