Aerostat balloons are all along the southern borders of the US. The one shown here is at Fort Huachuca located near Sierra Vista, Arizona. The “Tethered Aerostat Radar System” is a balloon-borne radar primarily used to provide radar data to US federal agencies involved in the “war on drugs”. Before these balloons came in the military’s radar systems were aimed at detecting high altitude fast moving objects (bombers). Small, slow moving aircraft flying low could easily slip into the US, running drugs and the like.

Hang Gliders parked at Torrey Pines Glider Port, adjacent to the world-famous PGA Tour stop, Torrey Pines Golf Course. Can anyone find any gliders in flight?

Although not very interesting to look at from space, the Mall of America is the USA’s largest mall. If you switch to map mode you can see that it’s so big inside the building they’ve named the streets.

And if that’s still too boring you can scroll north to Minneapolis / St. Paul Airport where a whole manner of planes are parked, landing and taking off.

Cadillac Ranch

This is Cadillac Ranch on old Route 66 outside Amarillo Texas. The “white” dots in the center of the image at the bottom of the dirt road are 10 Cadillacs, ranging from a 1949 Club Coupe to a 1963 Sedan. They’re all stuck bonnet first into the ground, and over time the ten cars have been ravaged by the elements and covered over with years of ever-changing graffiti.

Originally the cars were put there after an eccentric millionaire invited an artists’ collective to help in the creation of a unique work of art for his ranch. Full story is here.
