Marree Man
Sunday, 26th June 2005 by Alex Turnbull
Ploughed into the Australian outback in 1998 (by persons still unknown), the Marree man is a 4km figure of an aboriginal. It's faded into the desert quite a bit now but the shape (and size!) is still quite apparent. Wikipedia says that it was probably created using GPS and earthmoving equipment. There's a good page here which discusses the possible reasons for creating the artwork.
Wow!
I drove down the oonanadatta track a couple of years ago, didnt even know that was there!
Cool.

In the same kind, I try to find figures in the Nazca desert, but I must be blind because I don’t see anything (except the lines). If you see them…
I’ve found the Nazca lines, but I could only find them by comparing the location to the picture at Wikipedia.
Australia… Such a cool place! Wish I were there. Who knows- maybe one day I will? Despite it’s so bloody far away from Petersburg, where I came from…
I think I have found a figure in the Nazca desert.
Look here
I’m trying to find out the Long Man of Wilmington, UK, which is similar to Maree Man but much much older. Check at Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Man_of_Wilmington
Well the story goes that eccentric Bardius Goldberg is responsible for this creation using a GPS and a bulldozer. How creative !!!
Yes . My dear friend Bardius Goldberg was the sculpturer.. He passed away 7 years ago 2 days ago. A great guy who will always be remembered.
This should be tagged as a geoglyph so it is associated with the others.
So this person had to have had expertise in the aboriginal way of life, expertise with GPS tracking equipment and knowledge of earthmoving/earthcarving equipement. All this in the anthropological community? It would have to have been a team of people. One wonders if one could get records of equipment rental/transport to this far outlying region, for one, and then maybe movement of people, who would have to have been tight with the aboriginal community to get this done. Which brings up the question of agenda. This calls for a lot of understanding – very interesting.
My two children (Katarena, then 15; Enrique, then 17) and I (father, then ??, now ??+) were part of Gangles’ Wayward Bus tourgroup in 21JUN 2006. We camped at William Creek, but none of us went on a Wrightsair flight that would have allowed us the view from a Wedgie’s eye. The next day, we passed through Marree and did not see it from the view of an Emu’s eye. This now becomes ANOTHER reason to return Down Under. I just need more dinero! See all of you great Aussies in the future–“Juanito Hayburg”
