Here is the sports complex used for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Most of the venues were still under construction at the time of the photo, but you can still see the various sections.

Starting from the west is the Olympic Velodrome (with photo-stitching error) which was used for the track cycling. To the east are the open air swimming pools (of which only one is filled). Then we get the Olympic Indoor Hall before the Olympic Stadium, with the two parts of the roof lying to either side. North east are the sixteen tennis courts.

For comparison a more recent satellite photo is available on Wikipedia.

Ostankino Tower

The best shadow yet is that of Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow, it’s absolutely huge.

On completion in 1967 it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world; however, the CN Tower in Toronto overtook it in the 1970’s. In 2000 the “Moscow Beauty” as it is known caught fire and during the repair work the pinnacle was raised about 122 feet in order to reclaim the title of world’s tallest free standing structure. I can’t believe they cared that much!

Disneyland Paris (formerly Euro Disney). The largest section at the top left is Disneyland Park below which is the smaller Walt Disney Studios Park and the east are the hotels and a massive car park.

I tried to find some Mickey Ears for the thumbnail shot but there doesn’t appear to be any :-( Can any of you eagle eyed sightseers spot a mouse?

We have no idea where exactly this is (lack of map data makes it a little tricky to work out), but check out the totally cool bridge somewhere in Brazil! Best shadow yet I think.

If anyone knows what and where this is, please let us know in the comments. Cheers :-)

Update: Thanks to our helpful readers, we now know that this is the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge which crosses the Paranoá Lake, in Brasília. There’s an absolutely stunning image of the bridge available here, and another here, but the Wikipedia page is a little lacking. If interested, you could also read this article about it though.

There’s also some fascinating stuff in the comments thread about the construction and design of Brasilia itself.

Tokyo Tower

This is the Tokyo Tower in Japan, which is the world’s tallest self supporting steel structure. Although it seems like everything can be classified as the world’s tallest something… ( I hearby declare myself the world’s third tallest Google Sightseeing Administrator).

The Tokyo Tower is (obviously) based on the Eiffel Tower, but at 333 metres, is 9 metres taller. There’s lots of good info about the tower over at Wikipedia, so we’ll just mention that the first floor houses an aquarium, home to 50,000 fish, and that this was the landmark which was destroyed again and again by Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, Guiron, Gamera, and scores of other rubber-monsters.
