Cool!
Manitou Island, which this bridge connects to the mainland, is the world’s largest island in a lake (Huron). Not too far south of the bridge is Lake Manitou, the world’s largest lake in a lake. Lake Manitou, in turn, has a few small islands – islands in a lake in an island in a lake.
Whoops! Did I say Lake Manitou? I meant Mantoulin Island!
This is one of my favorites so far.
AWESOME! I WOULD LIKE TO GO THERE!
Peter, Do you ghost write for Dr. Seuss?
look at the thing just to the east of the bridge! At first I thought it was a transparent bridge or something (well, not really); it took me a while to figure out that it must be a cluster of telephone lines or something crossing the river.
The “thing” to the east of the bridge is the electrical lines (Hydro in Canadian) that serve the island. The bridge opens for boat traffic on the hour and is open for about 15 minutes, so I would estimate that the picture was taken at about 10 after.
The other way onto the island is on the car ferry MS Chi Cheemaun, which travels between South Baymouth on the island and Tobermory on the Bruce Pennisula. You can see it in this lo-res image:

Google maps suggests about a ferry / Google Earth on the left side of the island, but I can’t see anything on the pictures. 0_o
That’s a great image! I’ve visited the island and crossed that bridge last summer. I heard that it’s the only “swing bidge” left in the world… cool.
There’s also a swing bridge in Curacao. Off the coast of Venezuela.
