Like lots of things bought on the internet, our birthday present was a little late in arriving… however, 2 weeks after our first anniversary, we are proud to unveil the brand new Google Sightseeing design! So if you’re reading this in your news program, come take a look already, as we have several cool new features too.

Obviously it’s not finished yet (yes, this is a beta) – but have a wander around, kick the tyres, and let us know what you think.

We look forward to another great year!

Please note that some or all of the objects mentioned in this post are no longer visible on Google Earth or Google Maps.

Here is a great shot of a long train up in the wilds of Canada near to Saskatoon. My guestimation puts it at about 400 metres long. I can’t really tell what it is carrying as the trucks look to be covered. Anyone got any ideas?

C-130 Shadow

On a bit of field in St Louis, we see the shadow of a Lockheed C-130 gunship. Click through and have a look for the plane, but come back here once you’re done…

You couldn’t find it, huh? That’s because this isn’t a shadow, it’s a bit of art. The detailed life size plane shadow was painted in 2002 for an art festival held in the urban wasteland of North St. Louis City in Missouri. Apparently some of the towers and whatnot around the area were also done as part of the same festival.

Peace on Earth

You can all rest easy tonight; I’ve discovered peace on earth!

The first bit of peace is found in Watershed Park, a dense woodland near Redmond with trails for cycling, horse riding, etc. A local cyclist took this ground level photo.

There’s twice as much peace in the back yard of Yates Mill Elementary School, although the larger of the two is a bit faded.

I’ve done a lot of research on this remote forest near Lincoln, Nebraska and managed to identify that it was probably planted around 1957…

OK, I didn’t do very well with the research; I must a bit rusty after my week off! Anyone know anything more?
