While we were busy scouring the brand new Australia Day images, we failed to notice that Google have also unleashed an absolute wealth of new imagery for the rest of the world! Here’s what’s been updated:

matterhorn.jpg

  • The entire country of Denmark at 50cm

  • Potsdam and Magdeburg, Germany
  • Barcelona, Belem, CapeTown, Galapagos (Isabella Island), Manaus, Mt Saint Helens, Recife, Rio, Venice)
  • Whistler, British Columbia
  • The whole states of Wyoming and Utah

It seems here’s also been loads of other Digitalglobe updates too, so what on earth are you waiting for? Get exploring already, and send us what you find!

  1. Corey V. says:

    Still no Canterbury.

Oh well – the town I grew up in (and my ancestors helped settle) Jackson, Wyoming is now visible. That means I can now see both of the houses that my grandfather built – one in jackson, one in Victor, ID.

  2. Quentin says:

*Sigh* Still nothing for the UK…

  3. SMM says:

Whistler will be the site of the 2010 olympic alpine and cross-country events. Now the athletes can start studying the course.

  4. mister scruff says:

  5. Alex says:

mister scruff, it looks like the imagery of Devil’s Tower hasn’t changed since we posted it way back in April 2005 (other than having had its projection corrected that is)

  6. Todd says:

Can’t forget the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone.

  7. GCN says:

Riems isn’t a french city (but Reims is correct :) .

  8. Patrick says:

OK, here is what I hope is not too stupid a question. When Google does these updates, is it automatically loaded into Google Earth each time I open it anew? Or do I need to keep downloading newer versions?

  9. Quentin says:

To patrick, the updates will automatically appear in GE when you start it up, you dont have to do anything. Note that you must be connected to the internet.

  10. Patrick says:

what is this “internet” of which you speak?

  11. James says:

    Hey Patrick,

In addition to what Quentin replied, you may have to clear the disk cache to instantly get the new imagery. To do this go to Tools->Options->Cache.

    Enjoy!

  12. Duane Edwards says:

I’ve got another stupid question, but here goes: When I download the upgrade for GEarth…. either the upgrade, or the google earth 4 version…. and I go to install it I get an error message: 0×80040708 No such interface supported. Set up will now terminate.

Has anyone else run into this issue? if so, what’d you do? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

    -Duane

  13. Larry says:

I found Grand Coulee Dam in high-res. Banks Lake, to the south, is partially complete, with the north end of Steamboat Rock (800 foot high mesa, 600 acres on top) visible in high-res.

  14. RS says:

FWIW, I can confirm that the whistler pics are quite old. Probably circa 2003.

  15. bl says:

Some of the pictures of Switzerland seems to be around 6 years old.

  16. michael says:

The Swiss pictures are quite old – older than those before. And at least for Zurich, the image quality is worse than before.

As I’ve heard from a friend who works for the company providing the pictures (Endoxon), there will be an update with current images in a few months.
