Here we see Germany’s Burgplatz, which is absolutely swarming with people. Or, more specifically, very orange people!

The overwhelming orange-ness of the crowd can only mean they are fans of the Dutch football team, who were gathered in the square during last year’s World cup.

The Netherlands national team was knocked out in the second round by Portugal, so this Dutch celebration probably coincides with their one-nil win over Serbia and Montenegro in the nearby Zentralstadion on June 11th, 2006.

The big Dutch flag on the west side of the square (presumably the roof over a big screen showing the game) would be another giveaway … :p

Nooooooooooo! Seems McMaster suggested this sight before I did today.
I don’t think they’re already celebrating - it seems to be in the morning and the game was 15:00 :)

The moment I saw the title I was thinking, football as in American Football or Soccer? I’m Dutch, so litteraly I would say football as well, but I guess the proper English term is soccer ;-)

    Anyway, nice picture :)

I agree with Nico. That’s why the stadium is empty. If the crowd were watching the game as it was happening, we should be able to see it, too.

Must.. resist… troll.. can’t.. do it.. Arg!

The proper English term is football! The sport is called football in every language on the globe except American English!

  7. 7. Maff says:

Agree with Mark, it’s called Football in English, but not in USA or Australia

Wordpress told me to ’slow down’ … are you discouraging more than one post in 24 hours?
    So here goes another attempt:
There are a few lampposts in the vicinity which cast nice clear shadows. Those shadows put the sun’s Azimuth at fairly close to 125°. If you look at that day’s tables for Dresden (the closest location they appear to have) on http://www.sunposition.net, you get a time of 11:00 … so it’s probably the warm-up party.

@Tammo: not at all, Wordpress does that when it think you’re posting comments within seconds of each other (like a spambot might). Let me know if it happens again.

@Franklin, Mark, Maff: Why must we always have this argument? ;-)

James, I don’t think you’re in a position to comment on Football at all… Which major tournament have Scotland been in recently, eh? =D

Just to let you know that Wordpress also told me to slow down when I went to post a comment on the Needles the other day. Had to type it out again. Very annoying!

    @Lee: I’m ignoring that comment ;-)

@ajho: I think I know what’s up there and will fix it asap. Thanks for letting me know.

    “Here we see Germany’s Burgplatz..”
Makes Germany sound like a small town…”Here we see Genericville’s Main Street”…
