Google Street View on iPhone
Monday, 24th November 2008 by James Turnbull
Apple's recent iPhone 2.2 update has added Google Maps Street View to the already essential device.
With the iPhone's pinch-zoom and finger-panning, the experience is even better than on the web.
The only downside is that the iPhone doesn't automatically load Street View from Google Maps links. This means you have to manually drop a pin to get the Street View mode, and then pan around until you find what you're looking for. Hopefully, Apple will address this in a future update.
However, as a navigational aide, I can see the iPhone Street View being invaluable - just as soon as they add UK Street Views!
I updated my iPod touch with the new software, but can’t figure out how to use Street View. Does it only work with the iPhone for some reason?
I found a few help forums online that said there should be a Street View icon when you drop a pin, but my maps application still looks exactly the same as it did before the software update, and I don’t see a Street View icon when I drop a pin.
Is anyone else noticing the same thing?
You must drop a pin on the place you want to view in street view (you can do this by going to the location and in the bottom right corner of the screen there is an icon that looks like a post-it peeled up) after you have done that click on the pin and you will see an icon with a man figure in a orange circle click on that and you will have street view
Ross: for some reason, the iPod touch 2.2 software doesn’t have Street View enabled!
However, there’s reports of an easy hack to manually enable Street View.
The new Street View icon is the leftmost icon on a pin label. So drop a pin, and touch the pin to display the pin label. On the left side of the label there is a new icon, a white silhouette on an orange background. If the area you are viewing has Street View data, the icon is active, otherwise it is dim. Touch the icon to zoom in into Street View mode, pan and zoom, and touch the bottom-right maps circle to get out of Street View into maps.
The quality of the images doesn’t seem as good as it is on the website, or is that just me?
Essential, indeed. Imagine, now you can immediately check if the world around you is a good approximation of what you see on Street View 😉
Thanks for the advice about the google map street view it really helped
Where can I see on street view? I can’t access my home town mount gambier
UK Street View is live now!
