Last week Google removed some street view photos from upstate New York as they showed the camera car hitting a wild deer as it crossed the road.

The Google Sightseeing team was unfortunately on holiday when the news broke1, but the images were captured by various other sites before Google took them down.

However, you can still see deer in Japan, where Google drivers have managed to avoid a repeat incident.

Google have now issued a statement, complete with advice on what if a deer bolts in front of your car.

  1. Ironically, we were at a wildlife park when this story was published all over the internet.

I wonder why Google didn’t self-edit that scenery out before publishing? They obviously knew it was an abnormal event.

  2. Capital Chay says:

They didn’t even stop to pick it up. What waste of good meat.

  3. Edward says:

It would have been a waste but as it says on the Google comment “The deer was able to move and had left the area by the time the police arrived.” Maybe they should have backed up and finished it off?

  4. Tim says:

Deer = rat with longer legs

Best post ever! I hope the deer is alright though.

That last one is in Nara, Japan, which is full of tame deer that people can feed and pet. You can even see a sign on the side of the road in that street view shot that has rules for how to treat the deer. Here are a couple of my favorite pictures I took of the deer when I was there:
